Just wondering why is jesus shown as a white man when hes born in the middle east?

in pictures and art work ( im a textile designer and have done some art etc like pictures) why is jesus and prophets etc shown as 'white' when they were born in the middle east? just wondering.. found it odd thats all.. no offence intended
